SOS hosts three Continental consultations for ACHPR’s Resolution 631 in 3 months
December 12, 2025Newsletter Vol 7
As we close the final quarter of the year, we find ourselves looking back on a period marked by both intense advocacy and meaningful progress in the fight to safeguard South Africa’s public broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
One of our major highlights this quarter was hosting the Annual Public Service Media Symposium, a cornerstone event that brought together experts, media practitioners, academia, community media and civil society organisations, to interrogate the future of public service media in an evolving digital era. The symposium offered a space for difficult but necessary conversations about the SABC’s funding model, the 75 years anniversary of the SABC, the Canal+ purchase of multichoice and the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) Resolutions 630 and 631. The insights shared at the symposium will continue to influence our advocacy priorities well into 2026.
We also welcomed new members into the Coalition, a powerful reminder that the strength of SOS lies in the collective. As more organisations, and individuals join us, our capacity to amplify the importance of public service media grows significantly. These new partnerships will be essential as we continue working on policy reforms and advocating for an effective public broadcaster.
