Public Service Media Symposium Report
March 5, 2026Launch of the Public Service Media Symposium Report
The SOS Coalition is proud to announce the upcoming launch of our Public Service Media (PSM) Symposium Report. A comprehensive report capturing the critical discussions, insights, and recommendations that emerged from the Public Service Media Symposium. The report goes a step further to situate the discussions within broad policy and public service media discussions.
The report consolidates key findings and perspectives shared by panelists and participants, offering an in-depth reflection on public service media as a cornerstone of democratic infrastructure. It interrogates the funding model and governance of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), examines the implications of the Canal+ acquisition of Multichoice on the broadcasting sector, and unpacks the role of public service media in the context of misinformation and disinformation.
The report also highlights the significance of African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) Resolutions 630 and 631, and underscores the critical role of the SOS Coalition and broader civil society in advocating for a sustainable, independent public broadcaster.
The launch of this report marks an important milestone in advancing dialogue and action on the future of public service media in South Africa. The SOS Coalition calls on various stakeholders to engage with the findings and work towards building a resilient and sustainable public broadcaster, our SABC.
